2013 Trilogy

$80.00 / 750 ml Add To Cart Update Cart

The genesis of Trilogy dates back to 1984 when our family set out to make the best wine possible by selecting the highest quality wine lots culled from our estate vineyards in Napa Valley. By blending traditional Bordeaux varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc - we created one of the original Meritage wines. Over the years we’ve added other Bordeaux varietals to this Cabernet-based blend, always seeking to create the very finest wine from each individual vintage. Our 2013 Trilogy brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot from our estate vineyards in Rutherford and Oakville in a wine that is richly fruited and generously structured. Dark and opulent with a saturated nose of blackberries, Bing cherries and sweet cassis, the wine slowly unfolds to reveal a core of black licorice, dark chocolate and mocha. This is a warm, voluptuous Napa Valley red with a long tannic structure that resolves in a lasting finish.

On the Vine

Sourced exclusively from our family’s estate vineyards in the Rutherford (82%) and Oakville (18%) appellations, our 2013 Trilogy reflects meticulous, sustainable farming practices along with the evolution of a wine style originated by the Komes and Garvey families and honed to perfection by winemaker Paul Steinauer. The stellar 2013 vintage in Napa Valley began with a warm spring that brought early bud break and created superb conditions for flowering and fruit set. With the exception of one heat spike, summer temperatures were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and ripening. Harvest was early, and continued dry weather extended these ideal ripening conditions until the last grapes were picked.

"Flora Springs was among the first Napa wineries to create a Bordeaux blend called Trilogy, and the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Trilogy is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec. Notes of sweet plum, licorice, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit jump from the glass of this dense, dark ruby/purple wine. It’s medium to full-bodied, with impressive purity and elegance. It’s meant to be an elegant take of Napa viticulture and they’ve pulled it off fabulously. This wine has excellent balance of all its component parts, and should continue to drink well for 15-20 years.

This venerable Napa winery continues to turn out high-quality wines and certainly has an impressive track record."

"The 2013 Trilogy is composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec. It opens with a complex array of aromas including black cherries and currants, layered together with mocha, sweet spices, along with some smoke, molasses and shaved coconut. Full-bodied wine with notable depth and concentration backed by a touch of underlying acidity giving it lift. It finished long with dark fruits and sweet spices lingering. Today there is still a presence of oak, but I expect that to fade as this continues to to evolve over the next decade." Read more.

Flora Springs scores with ferocious elegance

examiner.com
"Flora Springs has created a cabernet blend that celebrates the incredible fusion of three varietals that define elegance.

Your time swirling and sipping this incredible selection is long past due. This is bliss in a bottle.

The original “Trilogy” – a combination of Bordeaux varietals cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc – goes back 32 years ago when Flora Springs Estate set out to craft the best wine possible from wine lots selected from its vineyards. Over the years their wine wizards have added other Bordeaux varietals to the original blend that displays huge structure and rich fruit.

Its 2013 Trilogy ($80) combines cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and petite verdot from estate vineyards in Rutherford and Oakville appellations in a heady, muscular wine. (Warning: this “big boy” is not for newbies. It is ferocious and, albeit, subtle.)

Open this seductive wine about 20 minutes before serving to allow aromas of Bing cherries, sweet cassis and blackberry to start the show. Then swirl and sip dark licorice, mocha and dark chocolate flavors that explode on the palate and exit in a long, luxurious finish.

Pour this “big” wine with “big” foods such as prime rib, bold burgers and meat laden pastas.

Winemaker Paul Steinauer says this enticing, robust red wine can be enjoyed through 2025; but why wait?

"Flora Springs has been on a roll over the past several years, and its string of successes is extended by this lovely offering. From its very deep, impressively layered aromas to its keenly crafted, equally well-endowed flavors, the latest Trilogy is surprisingly graceful for the weighty, very generous wine that it is. That it is intense and so wonderfully tasty guarantees that there will be those who find no reasons for waiting, but its combination of structure, substance and fruity depth is that of a serious wine sure to improve for a decade or more

Flora Springs Trilogy Fits My Tradition For Great Wine During Masters
BottleReport.com
"Flora Springs Trilogy is a perfect wine for a special occasion. It is a New World expression of a Bordeaux blend, big and bold. The blend changes yearly, but Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape. The 2013 blend is 87 percent cab, 7 percent petit verdot and 6 percent malbec. The wine was aged 22 months in 73 percent French oak and 27 percent American oak.

The winery’s signature blend is rich and dark, with a powerful nose of blackberries and cherries. As it opens it reveals a variety of tastes, including blackberries, licorice, chocolate and plum. It is a sexy, voluptuous wine, with good structure and silky tannins. The finish is long and smooth. It is a wine you can sip all night long, but the flavors really explode when you pair it with a good meal.

The grapes came from estate vineyards in the Rutherford (82 percent) and Oakville (18 percent) appellations. It was a banner year in Napa, and the grapes reached maximum ripening.

"Big and beautiful, with opulent aromas of  black currant, dark cherry, sweet oak, baking spice, and toffee. Luscious and silky on palate, showing jammy black and red fruit flavors, over layers of exotic spice, toasted oak, earthy notes, and light smoke. Big fruit and spice finish. Elegant."
